Great things come in 3s and Las Vegas knows how to party, so what better way to celebrate than having two of the top five 3-point shooting percentage teams in the country do battle in the desert on Monday.
BYU is the only team in the nation that is shooting over 40 percent from 3-point range, hitting 42.1 percent, while St. Mary’s makes 38.8 percent of its 3-pointers.
While these teams both hit outside shots, they have different tempos as BYU is 143rd in the country in possessions per game while St. Mary’s is 306th. The last time these two teams met, the pace was played closer to the Gaels’ ideal pace, but the teams went a combined 20-for-42 from 3-point range, which is unusually high even for these teams.
St. Mary’s also has experience playing close games, going to overtime four times this season and winning three of those — including a takedown of BYU, 87-84, on Jan. 9.
With St. Mary’s entering playing solid defense, giving up 72 points or fewer in five of its past six games that have ended in regulation, the Gaels should give the Cougars fits and have a chance to pull the upset.
The Play: St. Mary’s, +4.
