The History of the Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors, one of the most successful franchises in the NBA, have a rich and storied history. The team was founded in 1946 as the Philadelphia Warriors, based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (NBA, n.d.). The Warriors were one of the original eight teams to form the Basketball Association of America (BAA), which later merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1949 to become the NBA (Goldaper, 1979).

The Move to California

Becoming the San Francisco Warriors:

In 1962, after spending 16 years in Philadelphia, the Warriors franchise relocated to the West Coast under the ownership of Franklin Mieuli and became the San Francisco Warriors (NBA, n.d.). The move was partly driven by the growth of professional sports teams in California and the opportunity to establish a more extensive fan base (Swift, 1995).

During their time in San Francisco, the team continued to enjoy success, led by Wilt Chamberlain and fellow Hall of Famer Nate Thurmond (NBA, n.d.). Despite losing Chamberlain to a trade with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1965, the team remained competitive, with Thurmond emerging as a star player (Basketball-Reference, n.d.).

In the 1963-64 season, the San Francisco Warriors reached the NBA Finals but ultimately lost to the powerhouse Boston Celtics led by Bill Russell (Basketball-Reference, n.d.). The Warriors struggled to achieve further success in the playoffs during the rest of their time in San Francisco.

The Birth of the Golden State Warriors:

In 1971, the franchise underwent a significant rebranding to represent the entire state of California and became the Golden State Warriors (NBA, n.d.). This change aimed to broaden the team's appeal and fan base throughout California.

The Warriors immediately succeeded under their new name, winning the NBA championship in 1975 (NBA, n.d.). Led by Hall of Famer Rick Barry, who won the Finals MVP, and head coach Al Attles, the Warriors achieved a memorable upset against the heavily favored Washington Bullets in the Finals, sweeping them in four games (Basketball-Reference, n.d.). This victory marked the team's third championship and the first under the Golden State moniker.

The 1975 championship team was known for its teamwork, depth, and unselfish play, embodying the "Strength in Numbers" philosophy that would later become a hallmark of the Warriors' success in the 2010s (Hollinger, 2015).

The Golden State Warriors, led by Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, have transformed the NBA by popularizing and revolutionizing the three-point shot (Pennington, 2016). Their unprecedented success with long-range shooting has led to a league-wide shift in playing style as more teams prioritize spacing the floor and shooting from beyond the arc (Kussoy, 2019).
